America imprisons more people than any other country in history, in both absolute and relative terms. American prisoners — disproportionately racialized and poor people — are held in inhumane conditions that include long periods of solitary confinement, in violation of international protocols against torture.
Today, September 9, prisoners across America will stage the largest prisoners’ strike in American history. Companies like Boeing, Starbucks and Victoria’s Secret, which rely on coerced labor from prisoners, will not get any manufacturing out of American prisoners tomorrow.
